Kooky

Having lived in vans in Polzeath for a few years I’d become pretty accustomed to a few frosty post work beers at the local beach bar (The Rum Bar). One evening after several of the aforementioned frostys a friend and I found ourselves in his caravan, deep into one of the many long and varied conversations often had at Robbie Love’s campsite. These conversations invariably included discussions of the future and our increasingly elaborate plans for it – plans which (for me at least) featured a large garage filled with kooky vehicles, surfboards and numerous on the go projects.

Then came the idea of campervan conversions – buying, converting and selling – easy right? After several more late night conversations and some research I came to the conclusion that the investment and timescale required to build the vans the way I’d want to vs. the realistic sale prices didn’t make for a good business model. That was the end of that, for a while at least.

Fast forward a week or two, after another evening in the Rum Bar, I was sat once again discussing campervans and the idea of renting vans somehow entered the conversation. I could have an even bigger collection of vehicles and share them with like minded people. Sounded perfect to me. So, the big question, was it a realistic/ viable business model? It all added up, it all made sense. That was the night that kooky campers (as an idea at least) was truly born.

These discussions and ideas continued to develop over the coming months. The ideas grew perpetually and became more and more exciting as I travelled through Indonesia with some close friends. Unfortunately upon my return any hopes of getting Kooky up and running were put to an abrupt halt as the chaos of the Covid pandemic gripped the world. I then found myself Living in a friends hostel in Tintagel with no money and no idea what the future realistically held. Kooky Campervans looked and felt more like a dream than a plan.

After a crazy couple of years I decided to move to Bude with friends, falling in love with the town, the community and the location. I soon settled in and Kooky Campervans moved quickly from being at the back of my mind to being my focus!

Kooky Campervans was born as a LTD company in early 2022 after a push from my employer and friend Robin Ross (as well as the help and support of family members, my girlfriend and other friends). Kooky campervans lives and is planning on doing all of those late night fantasy conversations with friends proud!
